Striving to figure out how the church fits into today's society.
The church must recognize that we re in the midst of a cultural revolution and that nineteenth-century (or older) forms of church do not communicate clearly to twenty-first-century cultures. A major transformation in the way the church understands culture must occur for the church to negotiate the changed ministry environment of the twenty-first century. The church is a modern institution in a postmodern world, a fact that is often widely overlooked. The church must embody the gospel within the culture of postmodernity for the Western church to survive the twenty-first century.

What do you mean by "culture"? That may be the place to start. Everything we would talk about, if we don't have a right understanding of culture, would be entirely fruitless and would only lead us astray.
That's a good question. Is there such a thing as culture? What would that culture be? Can there be multiple cultures? If not why? If so, what is the correct one? Can their be a correct culture in today's society? That is what I hope answer for myself through this blog.

That may help. Notice the overview of Bauder's thoughts in the second paragraph. It is quite helpful in getting a start.
Have you read a paper by Abraham Kaplan on Pop Art? If not, I will try and find a link for you see.
your link doesn't work. Could you repost it?
I don't know how to post links on here. If you cut and paste, it should work. Be sure to triple click the line so you get the whole thing - a bit of it fell off the end of the line:P
yeah...i copied and pasted and it still didn't work
hmm, works for me. I'll try this again.

Make sure you string that all together in the address bar.
Have you read any of Bauder's thoughts? Or heard of Kaplan's article on Pop art?
there we go...the .pdf section of the link was left off. I will read it and get back with you.
Do you know of where I can find any articles by Bauder in regards to culture? I need to do some more reading on all of this. But I am not so sure what is meant by the comment "By this definition culture is the embodiment in life of a people's religion." It confuses me that this type of conclusion would be made a the world in which we live today. Is he seeing atheism as a religion? If that is so I would agree with this statement. However if he doesn't say atheism is a religion then where does he say that "culture is the embodiment in life of a people's religion."
The article is interesting to read because I see what he is talking about personally everyday. Pop culture would be the embodiment of those who are talking the loudest. Culture is mandated by what is popular. Hense, "pop". But the question still is how does the church find a niche in pop culture? Should the church find a niche in it or should we disassociated ourselves from it? I don't think there is a third option here. The emerging church is trying to creation an amillennial "Christian Utopia" on Earth through the Christianization of culture. But in the process they are claiming all things are holy. There isn't a sacred/secular distinction. I wouldn't say this but it is interesting at the conclusions that they come to with how Christians are to fit into culture. They stress that they are apart of culture but at the same time they are creating a Christian culture that will eventually be the "pop culture." It really is fascinating to think about. Anyway...
